What jazz shoes can you recommend that can support your arch?

Filed under: jazz — admin @ 9:25 pm

I'm an intermediate salsa dancer and 20 minutes into dancing with new jazz shoes, the arches of my feet start to hurt. I try to wear a pair of lace up leather jazz shoes that have a full soles. When I tried dancing with half soled jazz shoes, my feet would start feeling the pain right after 5 minutes of doing shines. Any opinions on this?

I treat a number of dancers with similar problems. You are likely experiencing plantar fasciitis due to lack of support. We usually use either OTC or custom orthotics in the dance shoes to provide adequate support. Here is more detailed information on plantar fasciitis: http://footankle.com/heel-arch-pain2.htm

What is the difference between jazz shoes and jazz sneakers?

Filed under: jazz — admin @ 9:25 pm

I'm reasonably new to dance.

I bought a pair of black jazz shoes for a musical I just did, but what I would like to know is the difference between jazz sneakers and jazz shoes besides their looks.

The difference between jazz shoes and sneakers are that the sneakers are much more bulky and the shoes are more form fitting to your foot. Jazz sneakers are like a regular sneaker with more flexibility and a bendable arch. Jazz shoes are more like a ballet flat, soft, but different. Each shoe has its own benefits. I find the sneakers to be easier to balance and turn in because they have that extra rubber and flat bottom to give you added support when balancing. The jazz shoes however allow for rolling through the foot and make it much easier to feel the floor because they are much more form fitting to your foot. Jazz shoes are much better for exercises that require brushing the floor and rolling through, such as tendu or jete.

What is the best salsa music for beginners?

Filed under: salsa — admin @ 9:25 pm

Me and my partner are taking salsa(dancing) lessons but to master it we need to practice at home. But we don't have any salsa at home!

When I was trying to teach my girlfriend some salsa steps I realized that the most popular salsa songs have fast beats, lots of syncopation, arrangements with wind instruments, not to mention singing and a chorus. For a person who's new to salsa dancing, one of the toughest things to do is to mark the beat, which lies under all those layers of instruments, melody and singing.

So, I recommend instrumental salsa songs in slower beats or even the Cuban "son". The son is a Cuban rhythm that you can dance using your salsa steps but they are typically slower.

Of all places, I found two songs in iTunes meant for children that fit the bill for beginners, one's an instrumental salsa and the other an instrumental son. The versions with lyrics are meant to children how to multiply ;-).

If you do a search on "Cantando y Multiplicando" in iTunes you'll find these and a few others in cha-cha, cumbia, calipso, etc.

That will get you started. Have fun.

What type of bass guitar is featured most prominantly in early 1960's funk?

Filed under: funk — admin @ 9:25 pm

Which ones were the most popular at the time?
Make and model!
How did that change in the P-funk era?

Fender jazz basses, but more commonly fender precision basses. This wasn't so much because they were better than anything else, but more like because fender was the only thing most people could get. (not to mean that fender basses aren't extremely well made) Fender was more or less the first people to make electric basses affordable, consistent and easy to get a hold of…

But if you're talking about p-funk in particular, the major thing that gave bootsy his bass tone was the MU-TRON, or the modern incarnation that electro-harmonix makes: The Qtron

Its what gave him that underwater kind of tone.

Whats the difference between rap and hip hop?

Filed under: Hip hop — admin @ 9:24 pm

I’m sorry, I’m dumb when it comes to genres and sub genres. I was just wondering whats the difference between rap and hip hop? I’ve recently been trying to get into rap and hip hop (Eazy-E, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Run-DMC, NWA, ect) and I’m not an expert at categorization and I was wondering what their differences were?

Three.

Where can I find the hip hop song that has the opera song named Carmen in the background?

Filed under: Hip hop — admin @ 9:24 pm

It starts out with the Carmen song then it plays the hip hop over it, that's a guy. I've heard it refered to as hip hopera but I don't know the name of it or who sings it.

The first answer has linked you to the Carmen hopera, but I have this particular CD and I don't think they actually take any of the Carmen opera and use it, but one of my student's tells me that Jay-Z has done a rap/opera remix where he raps over the singer, and it's supposely very intense- but it's not on the Carmen MTV CD. Hopefully this helps.

What’s the difference between hip-hop turntablism and experimental noise turntablism?

Filed under: Hip hop — admin @ 9:24 pm

The way I see it,I’ve seen and heard it all when it comes to DJs in hip-hop. Now,in turntablism, we all know the basics-scratching,mixing,backspinning,beat juggling, and the most advanced of all-body tricks. Turntablism has played a very important role in hip-hop. Today,I have came across something new,and that is experimental noise turntablism, which leads me to this question-what is the difference between hip-hop DJs and experimental noise DJs? I know that the hip-hop DJs scratch and mix for turntablist battles. As for experimental noise DJs, I would figure these DJs would mess up the mix and the song by making silly sounds on the turntables, just by fooling around with the records-and not doing a serious DJ mix. Noise music is something I would like, especially when I would record myself switching channels on the radio, place the cassette in my tape recorder, and mess around with the speed control to see how the music sounded when it’s warped or distorted. And then I would constantly press the rewind, play, and fast-forward buttons to make it sound like turntables. I think that experimental noise DJs would make their mix sound like a broken tape recorder that is eating up the tape. But then again,I could be wrong. So,please tell me,what’s the real scoop behind this new sound of music?

My eyes get blurry tryna read that =/
